What is your horse saying to you?

It doesn’t take a genius to tell when a horse is downright angry… his ears are pinned, nostrils flared, eyes wide and crazy… just basically looks like he’s about to trample you, and just might!

But just the other day my husband asked me “why is Serenade standing like that? Is she going to kick?”  I looked over and did a once-over, and quickly explained that she was just “chillin” for lack of a better phrase… although she had 1 leg half-lifted, she was practically asleep in the cross ties, and the last thing on her mind was to kick the unsuspecting victim walking past!  It then occurred to me though, that for the “newbie” horse person, it may not be completely obvious what horses are trying to say through through their mannerisms and vocalisms, but it is extremely important for the safety of horse and caregiver that we know what’s up!

In this short article from practicalhorsekeeping.com, the simplest equine language is explained.  A must-read!
