Every real farm needs CHICKENS :)

I don’t even really like eggs that much… but ever since we purchased the farm I have been obsessed with the concept of having little chickens running around!  It’s just so FARM-Y!

…sooo you can imagine where this is going!

About 2 months ago Chad and I jumped right in… 6 little fluff-ball pullets (female chicks) arrived at the Green Barn from the local co-op.  We have 2 Australorp, 2 Ameraucana and 2 Rhode Island Red chickens.  These little chickies should begin producing a variety of brown and pastel colored eggs in just a couple more months, so put your orders in early!  :) Sooo much fun!  It’s been quite an adventure so far, mostly just keeping one eyeball on the dogs at all times!  I’m trying to get them to understand they aren’t supposed to eat their little sisters :)

Then there was the “buy a coop/build a coop” issue.  I said BUY (to cut down on stressing my husband out ) he said BUILD.  So we built… and I must say, we have the cutest coop EVER!!! It’s like a chicken MANSION!  Thanks for all your hard work and creativeness baby!

It is so fun to watch little Scarlett, Melanie, Rhett, Ashley, Mammy and Prissy (yes, GWTW is my all time fave movie!) grow into young adults.  They are getting braver and braver each day!

There are SO many reasons to add chicken to your backyard farm!!!  Here are a few of the best:

…but i’d like to add one more of my own – because if you’re an animal lover like me, you’re one step closer to your very own Noah’s Ark!!!

*****NOTE*****

As this story went to “press” (i.e. right when I was about to post it online) I rescued little Prissy from the jaws of DEATH… (in other words, the jaws of Grayce).  OMG – i’m not sure who was more horrified, me or the chicken!!!  Luckily, she was just “playing dead” and wasn’t really dead… she was up, moving around and eating after about a 15 minute stress-trance!

Moral of the story – DO NOT think your Great Dane understands the meaning of “don’t eat your baby sisters!”
