It’s spring!
In addition to the spring cleaning we all feel inclined to do, there is some spring housekeeping (or “horsekeeping,” lol!) that usually takes place… spring vaccines!
Most horses are due for their vaccines each spring and fall (depending on their individual schedule).
Although the Green Barn embraces a holistic approach to horse care, certain vaccines are imperative. Be proactive, not reactive! The following list outlines the vaccines I require the horses at the Green Barn to have. These diseases are easily preventable, but devastating if contracted. Safety first!
- Rabies (yearly)
- Eastern Western Encephalomyelitis/Tetanus (yearly)
- Equine Influenza/Rhinovirus (3, 6 or 12 months)
- Strangles (3, 6 or 12 months)
- West Nile (yearly)
- Coggins (yearly blood test for Equine Infectious Anemia)
In this article by animalforum.com, the above vaccines are explained in more detail. A great read!
